Sheldon and Shelbi Waldron grow turkeys for VPGC. Sheldon was born into the poultry business, his parents built the farm in 1989, before he was born. Growing up, he and his siblings were all involved in the farm daily. After a few years away, he moved back and has been actively managing the farm since 2017.
Sheldon manages the farming operations while working a full-time job as an Ag Loan Officer at The First Bank and Trust Company. Shelbi monitors the farm while Sheldon travels for work. The kids love walking the poults and help wash waterers, and setup for flocks. They love being involved!
Sheldon is against using computer curves to monitor bird health.
Instead, he uses housing conditions, how the birds are acting and weather forecasts. He uses down times to thoroughly wash down, disinfect, and windrow. Sheldon says, "bad start, usually a bad flock."" He pays close attention to animal welfare, and often thinks, "what if God made me the turkey… at minimum I would want my caretaker to do everything in his power to keep me safe and healthy."
The Waldrons strive to make every flock their best flock and learn something new with every flock. Sheldon says one of his greatest pleasures is sharing experiences with newer growers who also strive to perform well.
